Travelling by Car With Your Dog: 6 Practical Tips

Whether it is a trip to the park or a longer journey, a little planning makes car travel easier for you and your dog.

1. Restrain your dog properly

The Highway Code says dogs and other animals should be suitably restrained so they cannot distract you or injure you if you stop quickly. A harness that attaches to a seat belt, a travel crate or a dog guard are common choices.

2. Protect your back seat

A waterproof seat cover or hammock catches mud, hair and spills. See our Waterproof Dog Car Seat Hammock and Pet Car Seat Cover Mat.

3. Plan regular stops

On longer trips, stop so your dog can drink, stretch and go to the toilet.

4. Bring water

Pack a bottle and a bowl. A portable pet water bottle with a drinking trough is handy on walks too.

5. Never leave your dog in a parked car

Cars can get dangerously hot, even on mild days.

6. Build up gradually

If your dog is not used to the car, start with short trips and keep things calm.
