A lick mat is a textured mat you spread soft food on, so your dog can lick it off slowly. Many owners use one to keep their dog busy for a while.
What to put on it
Use soft foods that are suitable for dogs, such as plain unsweetened yoghurt or a mashed dog-safe food. Always read the label first. Some peanut butters contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs, so check the ingredients carefully and avoid anything that contains it.
How to use it
- Spread a thin layer across the mat.
- Place the mat on a flat, non-slip surface.
- Stay nearby and watch your dog while they lick.
- Take the mat away when it is finished.
Cleaning
Wash the mat with warm water and washing-up liquid straight after use, and let it dry completely before storing it.
A word of caution
Lick mats are for supervised use. If the mat is chewed or damaged, stop using it. Speak to your vet about your dog's diet and any treats.
